This year's event will be 100% online. Because this will be a virtual event, there are several changes that affect presenters and their presentations.
Please read the guidelines below prior to submitting your abstract. 

Deadline to submit an abstract is midnight, Friday, July 10, 2020. 

*Important changes*

  • Shorter Presentations - This year's presentations will be limited to 20 minutes. There will be 3 presentations in a 1-hour time slot. Presenting virtually is a different experience than being in person, so we encourage all potential speakers to review resources and tips on giving virtual presentations, such as TED talks.
  • Technical Presentations will be limited to 1-hour and we encourage instructors to provide attendees with opportunities to interact virtually. See additional details and examples below.
  • Speaker question/answer sessions - Virtual break out rooms will be set up after presentation sessions to provide a place for attendees to ask speaker questions and for follow up discussions
  • Test/Training Sessions - All presenters and moderators will be required to attend training sessions on the virtual conference technology and given opportunities to rehearse their presentations. 
  • Hands-on Workshops - Anyone interested in teaching a hands-on workshop will be required to host and manage the workshop themselves. You will be responsible for providing access to any needed software, data, and/or other necessary resources for workshop attendees.
    • Hands-on workshops will be scheduled for half-days (3-4 hours) and will not occur during the same times as other conference presentations

Details on presentation types and topic areas are listed below.

Attendees from past conferences have indicated that they prefer presentations and hands-on workshops that include lessons learned on presented projects, allow them to preview new and innovative uses for geospatial technology, teach them new techniques, introduce them to new concepts and ideas, or offer tips on how to improve their work. Speakers are encouraged to incorporate key takeaways and lessons learned into their presentations. 

Abstract submittals will be evaluated based on the following (your presentation should offer at least one of these):

  • Teaches attendees new skills/techniques
  • Introduces a new concept/idea
  • Provides tips on improving work processes
  • Highlights an innovative use for geospatial technology
  • Highlights a geospatial project and shares lessons learned

Presentation Types

  1. 5 to 7 minute "Lightning Talk" - Lightning Talks are short presentations that can be on any geospatial-related topic.  Submissions made here will be considered for the "Smorgasbord Lightning Round."  To learn more about the other Lightning Round options, refer to the Topic Areas section belowTime limits will be strictly enforced! If you are selected for one of these sessions, further instructions will be provided.

  2. 20 Minute Presentation - These presentations should have a broad general appeal to the Arizona GIS Community. Preference is given to presentations that are more educational in nature ("educate" rather than "tell"). For example, instead of telling the audience about a project you completed, tell about the project while explaining how you accomplished it and any lessons learned along the way.    

  3. Technical Session - These technical sessions go beyond a simple presentation and offer a learning experience for attendees. They are essentially a learning experience without the use of a hands-on computer lab. Each technical session will be one hour in length. Any materials/handouts must be provided by the instructor. Because these are virtual sessions, instructors are encouraged to offer some type of interaction with the audience during their session, such as poll questions.   4. Special Interest Group (SIG) Presentation - These are presentations for the following special interest groups. Acceptance of presentations will be made by the SIG organizer(s). Acceptable presentation types include standard speaker presentations and panel discussions. Two (2) 1-hour time blocks will be available for each SIG.

  5. Hands-on workshop - A computer lab will NOT be provided. Hands-on workshops allow attendees to get hands-on experience with GIS and related technology. These educational workshops are limited to half-day (3-4 hours). Instructors must supply their own virtual environment for their workshops along with any software, data, or other materials that attendees may need. Essentially, this means AGIC will provide registration, advertisement, and a spot on the agenda, but instructors will handle everything else. 

Please note that accepted presenters must register and attend speaker training.

The Fine Print

AGIC reserves the right to reject presentations and posters that are advertisements, political messages, inconsistent with the character of the Conference, or otherwise not appropriate for a GIS Conference.

    • Lightning Round Smorgasboard - Any geospatial or related topic can be included here. You must submit an abstract to be considered for this session.
    • Maps & Apps Lightning Round - Anyone submitting an entry into the Maps & Apps Challenge is eligible to participate in this session. However, it is limited to the first 10 entries. You do not need to submit an abstract via the Call for Papers to be considered for this session but you do need to enter the Maps & Apps Challenge.
  • Hands On Workshop Topics
    These are suggested topics for hands-on workshops that users have indicated a strong interest in. We will consider any geospatial related topic.
