Heat Severity and Heat Island Model Development and Applications

In effort to facilitate green infrastructure planning and regional environmental assessment efforts in Pima County, the Pima Association of Governments has built upon work conducted by the University of Arizona to produce a heat severity model which identifies relative heat stress in urban areas. The model has been developed entirely in Python using open-source libraries and leverages publicly available imaging data and climate data from the Landsat 8 satellite and PRISM Climate Group. This presentation will address the needs and use cases for model outputs, workflow and execution, repeatability, and the final data product.

Enhancing Existing Scripts with FME

Presenters: Félix Lafond-Touikan, Scott Sirotkin

Newton County, Georgia is located east of Atlanta on the edge of the metropolitan region. One of Newton County's GIS key responsibilities is making the Tax Assessor's CAMA data available to various government departments in a GIS format. This parcel data is used by e911, Planning & Development, various public utilities and other groups. It is updated nightly in order to provide the most recent information available. For many years the update process was accomplished with a combination of SQL and Python scripts, but these proved cumbersome to maintain and update. It also relied on an Esri technology that was no longer supported. It was therefore necessary to revise the workflow. Learn how this process was brought into an FME workspace which now handles everything in one process that is very easy to change when necessary. In addition, a handful of quality control checks were added to improve the overall process.

Optimizing Graffiti Abatement Using Machine Learning and GIS

Presenters: Seth Lewis, Stephanie Deitrick

The City of Tempe (COT), in partnership with Arizona State University's Cloud Innovation Center and Amazon Web Services, is working to optimize its graffiti abatement program through the use of machine learning, image recognition, event messaging and ArcGIS Enterprise integration. At this time, approximately 80% of abatement work by COT staff is proactive in nature, thereby forcing personnel to seek out the graffiti that needs removal. Our project will grant these staff an additional flow of information that they may use for route and workflow optimization. The presentation will touch on two themes: how the partnership came about and has been shepherded at a managerial level; and the technology stack that has been used and lessons learned from integration.

Takeaway: Key Insights to Be Gleaned Include: how to identify and leverage partnership possibilities with local stakeholders, architecting innovative integrations between cloud services and on-premise Enterprise GIS systems; source code will be provided to developers/programmers.
